LEED Certification Categories

The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization, dedicated to sustainable building and development. The USGBC is responsible for developing the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To achieve LEED certification, building projects must satisfy certain prerequisites, and earn points to achieve various credits based on seven categories of performance:

  1. Sustainable Sites (SS),
  2. Water Efficiency (WE),
  3. Energy and Atmosphere (EA),
  4. Materials and Resources (MR),
  5. Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ),
  6. Innovation and Design (ID)
  7. Regional Priority (RP).

How RadonSeal Can Help with LEED Certification

RadonSeal’s state-of-the-art concrete and masonry sealers can earn your project valuable credits towards LEED certification. The tables below describe the LEED credits that may be earned through use of our products.

SS Credit 3: Brownfield Redevelopment 1 Point

Intent:
Rehabilitation of sites where development is complicated by environmental contamination and to reduce pressure on undeveloped land.

Requirement:
Option 1: Development on a site documented as contaminated (by means of an ASTM E1903-97 Phase II Environmental Site Assessment or a local voluntary cleanup program).
Option 2: Development on a site defined as a brownfield by a local, state, or federal government agency.

Use RadonSeal Plus or RadonSeal Standard penetrating concrete sealers followed by Ion-Bond Armor (optional) to seal slabs on grade or sub-grade concrete and masonry against vapor intrusion and VOCs.

MR Credit 2: Construction Waste Management 1–2 Points

Intent:
To divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incineration facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable materials to appropriate sites.

Requirement:
Recycle and/or salvage nonhazardous construction and demolition debris. Develop and implement a construction waste management plan that, at a minimum, identifies the materials to be diverted from disposal and whether the materials will be sorted on-site or comingled. The minimum percentage debris to be recycled or salvaged for each point threshold is as follows:

Recycled or salvaged: 50% – 1 LEED point
Recycled or salvaged: 75% – 2 LEED points

Packaging materials used for our products, including drums, pails, bottles, skids, boxes and cartons can be recycled and thereby contribute to overall diversion of waste construction materials.

MR Credit 5: Regional Materials 1 – 2 Points

Intent:
To increase demand for materials and products manufactured in the region, supporting indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Requirement:
Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within a 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total materials value. The minimum percentage regional materials for each point threshold is as follows:

Regional Materials 10% – 1 LEED Point
Regional Materials 20% – 2 LEED Points

Our products are manufactured in several facilities in the US. Please contact one of our representatives to identify a product’s region-of-origin and to establish which of our products can help you to earn this credit.

EQ 4.2: Low-Emitting Materials – Paints and Coatings 1 Point

Intent:
To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of the installers and occupants.

Requirement:
All floor coatings, stains, primers, and sealer applied to interior elements must not exceed the VOC content limits established in SCAQMD Rule 113.

We specialize in low-VOC sealers, stains, and cleaners. Our RadonSeal and Ion-Bond Armor concrete sealers feature zero VOCs. Contact one of our representatives to discuss which of our products are right for your application to help you earn this credit.
