LastiSeal Concrete Stain & Sealer Instructions

How To Apply LastiSeal Concrete Sealer and Concrete Stain

Detailed Information

LastiSeal Concrete Stain waterproofs concrete and is slip-resistant, making it an ideal choice for outdoor concrete. Unlike acid stains, it can be also used on vertical surfaces.

Residential – Patios, Pool Decks, Driveways, Garage Slabs, Basement Floors, Retaining Walls, Hardscape, Fireplaces, Walkways, Sidewalks, Stucco, Cedar Woods, White Pine, Slab-on-Grade.

Commercial – High-Vehicular and Foot Traffic areas, Hotel Valet, Parking Lots, Retail Flooring (Breweries, Restaurants, Lobbies), Concrete Curbs, Statues, Signs, Monuments, Warehouse Slabs, Murals (highway art, building facades).

Coverage

  • Indoor Poured Concrete: 200-250 sq. ft. (per gal)
  • Outdoor Poured Concrete: 150-200 sq. ft. (per gal)
  • Concrete Blocks: 100-150 sq. ft. (per gal)
  • Cinder Blocks/Splitface Blocks: 75-125 sq. ft. (per gal)
  • Pavers 100-150 sq. ft. (per gal)
  • Brick 150-225 sq. ft. (per gal)

Conditions

Substrate should be dry prior to application. Concrete may require several days to dry after heavy rain or pressure washing. Avoid rain for 24 hours after sealer application. Ambient air and surface temperatures must be above 50o and below 100o F during the application and for 24 hours after. Avoid applying to hot surfaces in direct sunlight, or in strong winds and excessive humidity. New concrete should be allowed to cure for at least 28 days.

Surface Prep

Surfaces must be clean, bare and porous. Remove paints, sealers, curing compounds, adhesives, oil, grease, mold, efflorescence and other contaminants that might interfere with the penetration of the sealer and stain. Hard-troweled (smooth) concrete surfaces require chemical etching or mechanical abrasion to increase porosity. A sufficiently porous surface should readily absorb the stain below the surface. The pH of concrete must be between 6-8. Newly poured concrete (1-2 years) is highly alkaline and requires pH adjustment by acid washing. Use PowerEtch Concrete Etcher & Cleaner to obtain a proper concrete surface profile. Mask surfaces not intended to be sealed. Vacuum or blow off excessive dust and loose particles.

Surface Porosity

Never assume the concrete surface is porous enough! Licensed decorative concrete contractors take the safe approach and always acid etch or scarify the concrete surface before the use of water-based stains. Your options include acid etching, grinding, sanding, vacuum shot blasting, or light sandblasting. After acid etching, neutralize the surface with a solution of water and baking soda or ammonium solution. You can avoid hazardous acids by using our industrial-strength, non-corrosive PowerEtch Concrete Etcher & Cleaner. Flush the surface with plenty of clean water afterward.

Concrete pH

The pH of cement based masonry must measure between 6-8. New concrete (up to two years of age) is highly alkaline and can break down a stain or alter its appearance. New concrete requires pH adjustment.

Testing

Recommended: Concrete, brick, pavers, and masonry surfaces vary greatly in composition and porosity. Spot test to confirm surface suitability and ensure stain/sealer penetration.

Application

Apply using a hand-pump sprayer equipped with a fan tip nozzle (recommended). Alternatively, a brush or sponge can be used if spraying is not feasible. Paint rollers may be used, but not advised. Avoid pooling or excessive rundown.

STEP 1: Mix the product by shaking, flipping, and agitating the container vigorously.

STEP 2: Mix the product by shaking, flipping, and agitating the container vigorously.

DO NOT OVER-APPLY! Apply more liberally to faster-absorbing surfaces (pavers, rough concrete). Roll or brush away puddles. Keep back rolling to a minimum. Paint rollers can leave roller marks.

STEP 3: If a second application is needed for more porous substrates (blocks, pavers, walls), the product should be applied much lighter 24 hours or later.

TIP – One application is recommended. To avoid over-application, spot test a second application to ensure the substrate is absorbing the stain. If uncertain about sufficient absorption, use only one application.

Finished Appearance

Semi-translucent. Mottled (similar to acid stains).

Cleanup

Rinse tools with warm soapy water. Remove over-spray with a wet towel or sponge before it dries. Dispose of unused material and empty containers in accordance with local regulations.

Dry & Cure Time

Treated surfaces will appear dry in 2-3 hours. Surfaces should be ready for foot traffic in 5+ hours. Avoid vehicle traffic for 3 days after application. Water-based topical sealers (acrylic, urethane) may be applied 5-7 days later to further enhance and protect the surface appearance.

Storage

Store in a dry location out of direct sunlight. Do not store at temperatures above 100 °F. Avoid freezing.

Shelf Life

1 year from the date of shipment.
